You probably already know this, but there is an option to switch it off if you are uncomfortable with it. That means nobody will be able to feed your work through it.
from what i’ve seen, in order to switch it off, Pangram scans your post. so they force you to feed it once so that others can’t continue to do it. i don’t like that either :(
i think it's a smart business move (debatable), considering that AI won't be going away and it's the current tech-trend and the boom won't last forever. but it's horrid. data centers, loss of integrity within the arts, pushing brain-dead "literature"--it all makes me so angry. i can't be a part of the money in any way, if i can help it.
images seem safe. ultimately i'm hoping they alter the way it works here for those of us who want nothing to do with it, but i also feel that it's unlikely, seeing as they definitely have a signed contract at this point. so we'll just have to see how it goes.
i know! it's all so depressing. i've had to jot down some sites for those who have their own and are leaving. there are some who are leaving with no way to follow.
i'm hoping that more people use images, like you said. i think it's a proper way to protest.
The only thing I’ve just realised with images is I don’t think it’s very accessible because then you can’t use audio with it for people who are visually impaired? Unless maybe there’s a way to record separate audio. I don’t know – minefield. I wonder if it’ll just be a bit of a novelty and then people will stop using it and most people will just switch it off.
Whats pangram?
an AI detection tool that Substack has partnered with

Ah, that sucks. I don’t think this was a good move at all. I think more people will probably post via images.

Reading the different reactions has been quite wild – ranging from people who don’t care if people use AI, to people who are now leaving the site…
